Reishi Mushrooms Cultivation Kit And Common Challenges To Address
Hello friends! From the very beginning of mushroom cultivation, the basic principle you should know is that “prevention and treatment are two different areas”. In this article, PLN mushroom lists some common challenges in the Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma Lucidum) cultivation process for your reference.
1. Fruiting body is formed, but not developed
1.1/ Symptoms:
- Temperature below 17°C: It is difficult for fungi to form and develop their fruiting body if
- Temperatures above 35 – 36°C: either a fruiting body is not formed or a fruiting body is formed with the shape of a deer horn.
- The humidity of the air is too low, less than 60%: either the fruiting body is not formed or turns dark yellow and then dies while developing
- The humidity of the air is too high above 95%: the developing fruiting body turns soft, rotten, and slimy.
1.2/ Treatments
- Adjust the temperature in the farm appropriately from 25 – 30°C, water the ground, and spray mist in the farm. If the humidity is too high, the tarpaulin/net should be pulled out for ventilation. It should not be covered 100%, but left open on the ground or above. (Depending on each stage of mushroom growth to adjust more suitable)
- Choose the right time to cultivate
2. Fruiting body is formed and then branched (segmentation)
2.1/ Symptoms
- Due to the natural development process, cotton pad removal or incorrect cotton pad removal/ loosen, the fungus will be segmented into many branches (from 2-3 branches or more). Thus, many caps and small mushroom branches are formed on a mushroom body affecting its beauty and low yield…
2.2/ Treatments
- It is advisable to choose the strongest branch to keep and cut/trim the surrounding branches, leaving only 1 branch
- Adjust the appropriate lighting, do not let the growing house be too dark.
3. Worn by worms/bugs during fruiting body formation and onwards
3.1/ Symptoms
- The stem borer may have been located in the growing house or the surrounding environment. When invading into the body of the fungus, it will infect the fruiting body with bacteria or mold… causing rotten or the fruiting body no longer develop
- Caused by: spiders, aphids, termites, ants… destroy causing damage or rotten…

3.2/ Treatments
- The planting house should be cleaned right before bringing spawn and during the cultivating process.
- Cutting of fruiting body for the purpose of forming a new fruiting body does not solve the problem completely unless borers are killed. It is recommended to make an incision in another place so that the fungus can grow completely new and cut off the fruiting body that has been damaged by stem borers
- Use incense to repel flies and mosquitoes. Disinfect the growing house periodically with powdered lime.
- Cover the insect nets carefully around the growing area
4. Mushroom stems are mainly developed and caps are small.
4.1/ Symptoms
- High concentration of CO2 (> 0.06%) affects the development of Ganoderma lucidum fruiting bodies resulting in deer horn-shaped fruiting bodies and long stems.
- Due to lacking of light, mushrooms stretch out to find light resulting in long legs and small or thin mushroom cap
4.2/ Treatments
- Increase ventilation in the growing area or use a fan to ventilate.
- Increase the brightness by using light-colored tarpaulins and should be left open. It is recommended to have windows in the growing house as well.
5. Infected with some microorganisms in the fruiting body
5.1/ Symptoms
- Either soft fruiting body while normally develop or the fruiting body is deformed. The fruit body is covered by mold and is unable to develop further…
5.2/ Treatments
- The growing areas should be cleaned before cultivating and it is recommended to have at least 1 month resting period between new batches
- Irrigate with lime water on the base of the growing areas and surround areas.
- During cultivating process, the farm should be cleaned and the infected spawns should be removed
Note:
Mentioned above are our practical experiences when producing Ganoderma lucidum and growing on rubber sawdust substrates, so it is possible that when growing on other substrates, there will be differences.
The additional factors include water sources and the surrounding environment
If you have encounter and successfully overcome other problems, please do not hesitate to share with us your experience
